What is DDP’s Body Condition Index technology? 

DDP’s Body Condition Index technology uses a camera-based rig to assess cows as they pass beneath it during their normal routine. Rather than relying solely on periodic, subjective visual scoring, it creates consistent measurements that can be monitored over time at both individual-cow and herd level. 

Through DDP, this information can then be connected with the farm’s existing milk, fertility and lactation records. This allows producers and their advisers to see not only a cow’s current condition, but how it is changing and what that change could mean for her wider performance. 

Assess a cow once and you know her condition today. Assess her consistently and connect that information with the data the farm is already collecting, and you can see whether she is following the expected trajectory or beginning to move outside it. 

This can help identify cows or groups that may need attention before the change becomes more apparent through production, health or visual observation. 

The goal is not simply a better way to assess body condition. It is a better understanding of the whole animal across her entire lactation. 

What the data is already showing us 

Analysis of herd data from an IDS development partner has highlighted several interesting patterns. Some support what producers and nutritionists already understand in principle but become much more useful when they can be seen clearly within a herd’s own data. 

  • Condition can tell a different story later in lactation.  

Across the herd, most cows followed the expected body condition curve throughout lactation. However, a notable proportion of cows beyond 300 days in milk fell below the defined target range. 

Viewed alone, this is simply a condition measurement. When assessed alongside days in milk and lactation stage, it helps identify where further investigation may be valuable as cows move through an extended lactation. This could include reviewing nutrition, reproductive history, production or group management.

  • Body condition at calving connects directly to reproductive performance – and not in the direction you would assume.  

Within this dataset, cows that calved above the target condition range were slower  to resume cycling and less likely to be confirmed pregnant by 175 days in milk than  cows that calved within or below the target range. 

The above-range group lagged behind the other groups in both timing of first recorded heat and confirmed pregnancy. This is an important observation, although further analysis across additional herds is needed before drawing broader conclusions. 

It nevertheless reinforces a valuable point for producers: avoiding over-conditioning may be just as important as preventing cows from becoming too thin.

  • Trend is more valuable than a single snapshot.  

One assessment tells you where a cow is today. Several weeks of consistent measurements show you where she is heading. 

Rolling condition trends can highlight cows or groups moving in the wrong direction, creating an opportunity for a timely nutrition, management or health review. 

This is particularly valuable for DDP clients because these insights are difficult to obtain from an occasional manual body condition assessment. They become visible when the condition is measured consistently and evaluated alongside the other information already available for each cow. 

Not a standalone tool, but a connected layer 

Body condition sits alongside the other data streams DDP is already helping farms make sense of, including reproductive records, milk yield, days in milk, and lactation history.  

The value is not simply in the camera or individual index. It comes from connecting body condition information with everything else the farm already knows about the cow.
